Potential Five-Fold Increase Over 2006 Illustrates Rapid Adoption
of New Method of Convenient, Personal Communication
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Feb. 13, 2007 – No matter what gift
you plan to give your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, here’s something
you shouldn’t forget: text messaging is hot.
According to calculations by VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ:
VRSN), the leading provider of digital infrastructure for the networked
world, a record 725 million mobile messages, including text messages,
are expected to be sent and received across carriers and mobile application
providers on Valentine’s Day 2007 in North America alone. Should the
milestone be reached, it will mark the first time 725 million messages
have been sent in a single day in North America since mobile messaging
first came to market.
Valentine’s Day has traditionally been the busiest
day of the year for mobile messages. Last year, the number of messages
VeriSign handled on its network infrastructure jumped 40 percent from
February 13 to February 14.
Mobile messaging activity has skyrocketed in the past
12 months. VeriSign now estimates that more than 525 million mobile
messages are sent and received in North America on an average day. With
60 percent of the inter-carrier market and a leading presence in intra-carrier
MMS messaging, VeriSign touches nearly 180 million of these messages
each day. In 2006, VeriSign enabled 43 billion mobile messages across
its network globally.
“Americans have clearly embraced texting and other
forms of mobile messaging as the new method of choice for delivering
a Valentine,” said Jeff Treuhaft, VeriSign senior vice president, digital
content services. “While a text message will never replace chocolate
and roses, this remarkable spike in messaging volume on Valentine’s
Day – and every day – signals a shift in the behavior of consumers from
the physical to the digital world. They are relying increasingly on
their mobile device to communicate with the ones they love instantly.”
