VeriSign Unveils Egypt’s First Regional Internet Resolution Site for .com, .net Infrastructure

Cairo-based Internet Site Deployed in Response to Exponential Usage of Over 1,100%

Athens, Greece (Internet Governance Forum) – October 31, 2006 – Today at the Internet Governance Forum (October 30 – November 2), VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), a leading provider of intelligent infrastructure for the networked world, announced the installation of a Regional Internet Resolution Server (RIRS) for .com and .net in Cairo, Egypt.  This installation, the first in Egypt, strengthens the Internet infrastructure by enhancing the global infrastructure of geographically-dispersed Internet resolution sites.  VeriSign worked closely with the Egyptian government to establish this site at Xceed, the hosting partner.

“We are extremely pleased to be working with the Egyptian government and with Xceed,” said Ken Silva, Chief Security Officer for VeriSign.  “VeriSign continually seeks to locate RIR sites in geographic locations where traffic demand shows significant growth.  Egypt’s usage has surged over 1,100%1 since 2000.  The VeriSign RIRS will improve the Internet experience and overall security for the growing number of Internet users in the country.”

“We are very proud that VeriSign has chosen Egypt as a key global location to establish this Regional Internet Resolution site,” said Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology.  “Xceed operates one of the newly established state-of-the-art data centers located at The Pyramids Smart Village and is interconnected to the Internet exchange point of Cairo.  We are very appreciative that VeriSign has recognized the growth of Internet usage in Egypt and our country’s role as an economic driver for the region. This project comes as an additional dimension for Egypt's Internet infrastructure, to better serve Internet users not only in Egypt but also in the region.  It is vital that our government work with technology industry leaders, such as VeriSign, to continue to improve the experience of Internet users in our region. ”
