VeriSign Completes Successful Integration
of Private and Public Electronic Numbering (ENUM) Networks in Austria
Successful Integration Enables Carriers to Extend VoIP and Revenue-Generating
IP Opportunities beyond Disparate Networks
3GSM Barcelona (13 February 2006) -- VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq:
VRSN), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services for
the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced it has
successfully integrated its IP peering solution between Voice over IP
(VoIP) service providers and the Austrian Public Electronic Numbering
(ENUM) root. This is one of the first examples of integration
between public and private ENUM services and can serve as a template
for interconnecting public and private directories to facilitate the
growth of Internet Protocol (IP) applications.
ENUM assigns an Internet address to an individual
as a single point of communications and allows landline, mobile calls,
e-mail and instant messages to be exchanged using one IP number. Public
ENUM trials are taking place globally, facilitating commercial convergence
between the public switched telephone and VoIP networks.
The public-private integration, which completed compatibility
testing last year, gives VeriSign Carrier IP Connect customers access
to Austria’s Public ENUM data and eliminates the need to query network
databases multiple times to obtain individual contact information.
“Network operators and public policy officials have
been waiting for real-world examples of how public ENUM can interoperate
with carriers, enterprises and private databases,” said Bill Wolfe,
senior vice president, VeriSign Communications Services. “The integration
of VeriSign’s carrier directories with Austria’s public ENUM infrastructure
can help advance IP use for voice, video and other multimedia needs.”
The Carrier IP Connect service allows Session Initiation
Protocol (SIP)-based carriers to access ENUM data even if their networks
do not support ENUM. When service providers query the VeriSign service
with SIP or ENUM, the technology can look for a private route to the
dialed number. If none exists, it will call out to the public ENUM root
and return results in a single response.
“Austria has been a clear leader in creating a commercial
public ENUM infrastructure,” said Robert Schischka, general manager
of enum.at, the Austrian ENUM registry. “This combined public and private
solution is helping Austria build a solid framework for ENUM as the
core directory infrastructure for converged services.”
The VeriSign Carrier IP Connect service bridges disparate
broadband VoIP networks into a single IP connection. Rather than defaulting
external calls to the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), service
providers can use the solution to peer with other carriers and enterprises
around the world.
It also allows service providers to offer an expanded
selection of value-added services such as video and instant messaging
and can reduce costs by eliminating per-minute call termination fees.
With access to more end points on VeriSign’s global infrastructure,
carriers can extend their VoIP reach and be competitively positioned
to meet customer needs related to IP technologies.
VeriSign Communications Services enable the delivery
of rich and seamless communications, commerce and content interactions.
The fully managed, secure and reliable services are designed to help
network operators, Internet portals, media companies and retail brands
quickly and cost-effectively deliver next-generation voice and data
services that can increase usage, loyalty, revenue and competitive advantage.
