VeriSign® Powers Multimedia Message Services
Across Canada
Inter-Carrier Service Solves Interoperability Issues between Wireless
Carriers; Enables Widespread Sending and Receiving of Photos, Audio
and Video Clips
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA. – June 30, 2005 – VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq:
VRSN), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services for
the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced that it
is powering Canada’s inter-carrier multimedia message services (MMS)
for wireless phone customers across the country.
VeriSign’s comprehensive MMS interoperability platform,
incorporating unique transcoding technology, overcomes the numerous
challenges of exchanging multimedia messages across diverse networks
with different technologies. With the implementation of VeriSign’s service,
Canadian carriers will be able to exchange MMS messages with one another
without interoperability issues.
Announced by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications
Association (CWTA), this initiative is the broadest of its kind in North
America and will enable customers with MMS-capable phones, to send rich
content such as photos, graphics, audio clips and video clips to other
MMS-capable phone users. As of July 1, sending an MMS message will be
as convenient and simple as sending a text message to a recipient's
10-digit wireless phone number.
“Wireless subscribers are increasingly viewing messaging
as a convenient and cost-effective method of communicating on the go,”
said Vernon Irvin, executive vice president of VeriSign Communications
Services. “Solving interoperability issues in Canada is a major step
towards propelling the sending and receiving of photos, audio and video
clips into mainstream usage.”
“Canadians have already embraced text messaging, with
3.7 million messages being sent per day,” said CWTA president &
ceo Peter Barnes. “Now that VeriSign technology is enabling consumers
to send multimedia messages to friends and family outside of their wireless
providers, we’re sure to see a rapid increase in wireless traffic across
the nation.”
VeriSign’s Inter-Carrier Multimedia Messaging Services converts
disparate protocols, making multimedia messaging interoperability possible
between GSM and CMDA networks and provides connectivity and routing
between operators using similar or disparate multimedia messaging centers,
or messaging servers.
