VeriSign Managed DNS
Service provides 100% uptime guarantee for critical IP address resolution
functions
Mountain View, CA, April 25, 2001-VeriSign, Inc.
(NASDAQ:VRSN), the leading provider of Internet trust services, today
announced that the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), the
organization that administers and registers Internet Protocol (IP) numbers
for North America, South America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa,
has selected VeriSign's Managed DNS Services to ensure the reliability
and robust query response of its DNS (Domain Name System) zone file
information. VeriSign's Secondary Name Server Hosting, part of the company's
suite of Managed DNS Services, will provide secondary name server support
to ARIN's zones for inverse address mapping, which perform IP address-to-domain
name resolution on the Internet.
The Managed DNS Services suite leverages VeriSign's
expertise in managing the .com, .net and .org zones with over 28 million names and 2.5 billion queries
per day and the constellation of domain name servers around the globe
that support them. The Secondary Name Server Hosting service enables
enterprises to outsource the management of their DNS name servers to
VeriSign and provides a Service Level Agreement (SLA) guaranteeing 100%
availability of the customer's DNS data 24 x 7, 365 days a year. It
is the only outsourced solution that allows businesses to host their
DNS data on up to eight strategically located name servers in Asia,
Europe and the US for improved reliability, availability and performance.
"Inverse address mapping is a critical element
of the Internet's functionality, and we wanted a partner who could provide
the proper level of attention it deserves," said Raymond Plzak,
president and CEO of ARIN. "VeriSign's Managed DNS Services meet
our availability goals and will also help us improve overall system
performance."
With the Secondary Name Server Hosting service,
VeriSign propagates a company's DNS information to a carrier-class network
of globally distributed name servers located throughout the Internet.
VeriSign's name servers then answer all queries for data in the zone,
providing unmatched performance and geographical distribution. Because
the servers are located on different sites and networks, customers are
protected from single-point-of-failure outages. The service also offers
a screening option that identifies configuration errors in a customer's
data that may adversely affect operations before the data is transferred
to the VeriSign servers.
"In managing IP addresses, ARIN provides core
functions for the Internet that require guaranteed performance,"
said Bruce Chovnick, general manager of VeriSign's Global Registry Services
division. "By selecting VeriSign's Secondary Name Server Hosting
service, they can rest assured that even emerging DNS issues will be
identified and corrected before resulting in any loss of service."
