Increasing Employee Engagement through an Effective use of Video

CEOs are well aware that the “holy grail” of  long-term success is an employee base that is fully engaged in their work. Some keep their eyes on the bottom line, reasoning that by growing revenue, employees will naturally increase their level of engagement. Unfortunately, by definition, truly engaged employees are not motivated purely by monetary gain; so the burning question for many senior executives is “How can I increase employee engagement?”

Organizations can start by stepping up efforts to communicate the company’s mission, goals, and unique value propositions to every employee in such a way that they can understand the company’s goals, internalize them, and take personal ownership over these goals. It is critical, then, to increase the visibility of the CEO and other prominent spokespeople, through every available communications channel. Ideally, organizations can step up internal “all-hands meetings” and similar speaking engagements for key  executives, but obviously such executives are not easily able to open up time in their already busy schedules, and producing such events requires substantial investments.

Spreading the Vision
The key, then, is to engage in an internal communications program that attempts to “bottle” the vision, values, and passion of a company’s senior executives and communicate such information using a battery of media in support of live meetings and presentations. Optimally, such communications should convey the same persuasive power of the company’s most gifted and inspiring leaders. Video, then, with its ability to mix full-motion images, photography, tabular data, text, animation, music, and other media, is best suited for this critical, subtle task.

However, many organizations are forced to make difficult trade-offs between affordability, on the one hand, and reasonable quality on the other. For example, a silent, four-second, inch-square video with a low frame rate is easy to post on a corporate Web page to be viewed by all employees, because it is stored in a relatively small file, and it’s relatively inexpensive to do so. Yet such a video would merely be able to express the most rudimentary message, and due to its poor quality, would not inspire a large number of viewers. Conversely, a 15-minute, professional-quality video with music has the potential for easily capturing employees’ attention, yet due to its large file size, would put significant demands on an organization’s corporate network. In fact, many organizations have been forced to invest in additional infrastructure in order to provide such video.

An Intelligent Approach to Content Delivery
There is, however, a third alternative, one in which it is possible to leverage an infrastructure that can deliver high-quality video without impacting a company’s network, and without incurring significant additional expense. This alternative, the VeriSign® Enterprise Content Delivery Solution, is able to facilitate such delivery because the VeriSign infrastructure harnesses the collective, unused processing power of otherwise idle PCs in an enterprise network to share in the file transfer of each requested file. This intelligent use of resources greatly reduces network bottlenecks and file-transfer times.
