Questions and Answers about Rapid Updates to .com/.net Zones
What are rapid updates to the
.com/.net zones?
VeriSign Information Services (VIS) has implemented
a new feature called rapid updates. For many years now VIS has generated
new versions of the .com/.net zones twice a day. VIS is now updating
the .com/.net zones more frequently to reflect the registration activity
of the .com/.net registrars in near real time. As registrars make changes
in the .com/.net registry, such as adding new domains or making changes
to existing domains, visibility of those adds or changes in all 13 .com/.net
authoritative name servers is expected to average less than five minutes.

When are rapid updates scheduled
to be activated?
On September 8, 2004.

Why is VeriSign starting rapid
updates to the .com/.net zones?
VeriSign's proprietary authoritative name server,
ATLAS, was designed specifically to meet the needs of serving .com/.net.
Rapid updates are one of the features included in ATLAS's design to
provide a better user experience for .com/.net registrants/domain name
holders. After extensive testing, VeriSign is now confident this feature
is ready to be deployed.

What benefits do rapid updates
provide to the Internet community?
The biggest benefit is not having to wait potentially
up to 18 hours for changes made by a registrar to be reflected in all
13 .com/.net authoritative name servers. If a critical change to a domain
is required, that change will now be visible in DNS nearly immediately.

How long will it take from
when I register a domain or make a change to an existing domain on my
registrar's web site until I see the change in DNS?
It depends on how the registrar's systems work
and how long it takes the registrar to communicate your request to the
.com/.net registry. Once the registrar successfully submits a command
to the .com/.net registry, the new domain or changes to an existing
domain should be visible in DNS on average within five minutes.

Who is affected by rapid updates?
Anyone who uses a .com/.net domain will enjoy
the benefit of changes to .com/.net domains becoming visible in DNS
quickly. Because information about new domains and changes to existing
domains becomes visible in DNS very shortly after the registrar's systems
make the change at the .com/.net registry, anyone counting on the previous
delay between changes and visibility in DNS might have to adjust their
processes. For example, a registrant/domain name holder will not have
several hours after adding a domain to ensure that the new domain's
name servers are properly configured.

Will rapid DNS updates impact
SPAM?
Verisign anticipates negligible increases in
SPAM as a result of more frequent updates to the .com/.net zone files.
Rapid updates to .com/.net are consistent with processes in place at
other large domain registries today.

What effect will rapid updates
have on the TLD Zone File Access Program?
VeriSign will continue to publish .com/.net
zone files twice a day as part of the TLD
Zone File Access Program. Just as today, these zone files
will reflect the state of the .com/.net registry database at the moment
zone generation begins.

What steps is VeriSign taking
to mitigate any problems or issues that might arise as a result of this
change?
After months of quality assurance testing,
VeriSign does not anticipate any negative consequences as a result of
more frequent updates to .com/.net zone files, however as a courtesy
we are providing the Internet community with 60 days advance notice
of the change to the update process.
