What is the Internet Profile
Service for Registrars?
The Internet Profile Service for Registrars provides
a new way to learn more about the .com, .net, .tv and .cc domain names
you’ve registered on behalf of your customers. The service uses multiple
Web site attributes – such as rich media content, domain name resolution
status, and others, along with insights gathered from our analysis of
related data – to deliver relevant, actionable reports that help identify
potential customers for targeted marketing campaigns and new business
opportunities.

Why is VeriSign offering this
service?
We’ve developed this innovative service to help registrars
learn more about the domain names they manage, including .com, .net,
.tv and .cc, and use this information to increase registrations and
renewals. There’s no cost to registrars to participate, and they can
take advantage of the service right away to reach customers with targeted,
timely offers.

Why would registrars be interested
in this information?
As the domain name industry grows and matures, registrars
are becoming more interested in expanding their marketing by developing
targeted campaigns to reach specific segments of customers and prospects
to increase their registrations and renewal rates. They want to
be sure that they are reaching the right audiences, but they often don’t
have the tools to do so. The Internet Profile Service for Registrars
provides reports that can help segment and target customers and prospects.

Can registrars get similar
data from their own analysis or other sources?
Most registrars already conduct at least some analysis
of their customers’ domain names. However, many of them do not have
the time or resources to perform advanced analysis or segment their
customers by particular interests or audience attributes. They also
do not have the tools to be able to quickly identify thousands or even
millions of Web sites with the same attributes, including .com, .net,
.tv and .cc.

Does this service work with
other Registry offerings such as the Domain Name Suggestion tool, and
if so, how?
Yes. Once new customers have registered their domain
names thru the results provided by the Domain Name Suggestion tool,
registrars can use the Internet Profile Service to see if registrants
are actively using their new domain name.

How can these reports help
registrars? Can you provide some ‘real life’ examples?
Reports provide relevant, actionable information about
customers, thus helping registrars to segment and target their audience
more precisely.
Rich Media Content Reports, for example, use attributes
such as embedded video content, links to online video, commonly found
key words on the Web site, embedded content from major video content
providers, and other characteristics to identify .com and .net and registrants
who are ideal candidates for a corresponding .tv domain name. Registrars
can use this report, along with related marketing materials provided
on the VeriSign Web site, to contact these prospects via direct email
campaigns, telemarketing programs and so forth. The domain names in
the reports are compared against existing .tv domain names to confirm
they’re available for registration.

What are some of the attributes you can segment by? Can you provide
some examples?
The Internet Profile Service for Registrars focuses
on particular aspects of most use to registrars, such as whether or
not a domain name resolves and what type of content it has, which may
indicate that the registrant is a good candidate to register a complementary
domain name in another extension. One example is rich media attributes,
which include embedded video content, links to online video, commonly
found key words on the Web site, embedded content from major video content
providers, and other characteristics. Another example is business classifications,
which can be used to identify Web sites associated with a wide range
of commercial organizations.

Are domain name reports ranked by Web site traffic or similar indicators?
No, domain name reports are not ranked by Web site
traffic. By including all domain names associated with particular attributes,
the reports provide a wider range of potential customers to reach.

How much is VeriSign charging registrars for this service?
There is no charge for registrars to participate in
this program. VeriSign does require that registrars sign an Internet
Profile Service for Registrars Agreement, in which they agree to not
charge resellers for reports or use the data for purposes other than
those for which they were intended.
