I. Overview of the i-Nav suite of plug-ins
What is the capability of i-Nav
and its suite of plug-ins?
The i-Nav plug-in and associated components
enable the resolution and display of IDN addresses in Microsoft's Internet
Explorer browser, Outlook Express and Outlook applications. For more
information and to download the latest plug-ins go to www.idnnow.com.
The i-Nav plug-ins are free, both to users and to any of our registrar
partners who are interested in distributing the i-Nav plug-ins in their
local area.
How do the i-Nav plug-ins resolve
IDNs?
The i-Nav suite of plug-ins enable the resolution
of IDN's while providing native language script (Multilingual.TLD) retention
in the Internet Explorer browser address bar and addresses in email
applications. The i-Nav plug-ins need to be installed only once; thereafter
it automatically undertakes all the resolutions locally on your machine
and updates itself automatically. For more info on the latest enhancements
to the i-Nav plug-ins go to www.idnnow.com.

What top-level domains (TLDs)
are supported by the i-Nav plug-ins?
i-Nav supports all gTLDs and all ccTLDs as
specified by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) that adhere
to the IDNA standard.
Who is the audience or intended
user for the i-Nav plug-ins?
The i-Nav suite of plug-ins are intended for
Internet users, not registrars nor registrants.VeriSign believes, however,
that the added functionality of the software will aid Internet end-users
in adopting and using IDNs. This in turn will drive increases in renewal
rates and new registrations, all of which benefit the registrars. Registrants
too may benefit by helping to assist in the distribution of i-Nav.
When are the i-Nav plug-ins
available?
The plug-in for Internet Explorer, Outlook,
and Outlook Express are available presently. Note that the plug-in does
not require any special registrar implementation or integration.
Where can I get the plug-ins?
The i-Nav plug-ins are available at www.idnnow.com.
Do I have to do anything to
make sure I have the latest and most updated version?
No. The i-Nav plug-in has an auto-update feature
that will check for any newer version every 24 hours. Should there be
a newer version, the software will be automatically updated without
you having to worry about it. Note that users with personal firewalls
may see a request being made from "naviagent.exe" or just
"NAVIAgent". This is i-Nav's auto-update program and in order
to insure that the software gets updated you need to allow this request
to pass through.
What standards do the i-Nav
plug-ins support?
The current version of the i-Nav plug-ins supports
both the final IETF standard known as "Punycode" as well as
the interim standard encoding known as "RACE" to provide dotCom
and dotNet Registrars and Registrants time to migrate their websites
to the new standard.
Can I send e-mails or use e-mail
addresses that use the format Multilingual@Multilginual.TLD?
Currently, using native language script in
the username portion of the e-mail address is not supported by any published
Internet standards. VeriSign is working with many groups to arrive at
a published standard and i-NavOutlook and i-NavOE will be automatically
updated when this becomes available. Currently, only ASCII@Multilignual.TLD
is supported.

II. The Download and Installation of the plug-ins
Where can I download the i-Nav
plug-ins?
To download users may go to: www.idnnow.com
which provides additional information to end users and partners alike.
Downloads of the latest versions of the plug-ins are available from
this site.
What happens when the user
downloads the i-Nav suite of plug-ins?
Downloading for first-time users is as follows:
- Prior to the download
of the plug-ins, the user is presented with a License Agreement.
- If the user clicks
"Accept," the client software is provided to the user in the
form of a signed ActiveX control and an install page appears.
- If the user clicks
"Yes" to accept the software the software is automatically
installed and once complete, the i-Nav plug-in opens a new browser window.
- After installation,
the end user can fully utilize IDNs to navigate and resolve to any web
site that supports the Internet standard for IDNs as well as send email
to users who have email addresses set up as part of their domain.
To resolve to an IDN-compliant web site:
- The user inputs
an IDN in the browser's address bar (MS I.E. 5.0 or 6).
- The browser transforms
the internationalized characters into an ASCII-compatible encoding using
name preparation and an encoding process. During the transistion period
i-Nav will encode both RACE as well as Punycode for dotCom and dotNet
addresses and send both requests to DNS as i-Nav will not know which
encoding the Registrant has choosen to delegate their site. During the
process the end user will see a page informing them of this process
and whichever request comes back first from DNS i-Nav will navigate
the browser
- Note that this process
happens ONLY for dotCom and dotNet names--for all other domains only
Punycode is used.

Can the end user download the
i-Nav plug-ins from behind a firewall?
Yes. The download occurs over HTTP port 80,
which is open on most firewalls. For corporate environments where the
download of ActiveX components are blocked VeriSign has developed a
standalone installer in the form of an packaged application.

III. Using the i-Nav plug-in
Where will the resolution process
take place after the i-Nav plug-in has been installed?
Resolution takes place within DNS. The string
is formatted into an ASCII-compatible encoding and then routed to DNS.
After the i-Nav plug-in is
installed, will it work in Netscape?
No, as it is not necessary. Support for IDNs
is now native beginning with Netscape 7.1/Mozilla 1.4. In addition,
other browsers such as Opera have announced limited support and Apple/Safari
is expected to announce support in the near future. Note: if Internet
Explorer 5 or 6 is not installed, the plug-in will not be downloaded.
Internet Explorer 7 supports IDNs without the i-Nav plug-in and therefore
IE 7 users do not have to install the i-Nav plug-in.
Will I always need the VeriSign
i-Nav plug-in?
No. With the published standards for IDNs now
available, VeriSign expects application developers to integrate support
for IDNs in their applications.
How do I use the i-Nav plug-in?

What versions of Internet Explorer
does i-Nav support?
The i-Nav plug-in is compatible with Windows
98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and runs in Internet Explorer 5 and 6. Due to the
limitations of English versions of Windows 98, ME and NT, it is not
possible to enter multilingual text into the address bar and therefore
you cannot use i-Nav on those operating systems. To enable multilingual
usage for English versions of Windows 2000 and Windows XP, please go
to Control Panels/Regional Options and then select the languages you
wish to use.
Why am I getting an error when
trying to navigate to an IDN site?
There may be a number of reasons why the name
you are trying to visit cannot be reached.
- The server associated
with that domain name may currently be offline
- The domain name
itself may be registered correctly but has not been setup appropriately
by the Internet Service Provider where the server is located.
- The domain name
is currently not registered.
- The i-Nav plug-in
may not be correctly installed. To verify this, please look in the Internet
Explorer/Tools menu for i-Nav Options. If there is no option then i-Nav
has not been properly installed.

How do I enable or disable
the auto-complete menu?
i-Nav's auto-complete window is designed to
make it easier to enter multilingual URLs by eliminating the need to
switch from to English when entering domains.. Typing a "."
(full-stop character) in Internet Explorer's address bar automatically
displays i-Nav's TLD auto-complete window. The TLD auto-complete window
presents a list of 3 possible TLDs to select from. This list is based
on URL's you the user commonly visit. To select the default (highlighted)
TLD in the list press the enter key - the auto-complete window will
append the TLD to the URL in the address bar and navigate to the address.
Selecting a TLD in the list other than the default is accomplished through
the use the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard. A TLD may also be
selected using the mouse. Additional TLD's will automatically be added
to the auto-complete list as you enter them manually. The TLD auto-complete
window can be disabled through the i-Nav Option panel that is available
under Internet Explorer's Tools menu. Immediate navigation after a TLD
is selected may also be enabled or disable.
