Administrative Questions & Answers

What are the TLD Zone Files?

The Top-Level Domain (TLD) Zone Files are the database files maintained by VeriSign that map active Second-Level Domain Names in .com and .net (i.e., verisign.com) with their associated unique Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of the host server for such domain name. A separate file is maintained for each of the .com and .net TLDs. The TLD Zone Files have been maintained primarily to facilitate increased system throughput and overall Internet efficiency.

What is Whois?

The Whois database maintained by VeriSign is an authoritative directory for all domain names registered in the .com and .net TLDs. For each registered domain name, the Whois database includes the following information: domain name, registrar of record, the registrar's Whois server, referral URL, last updated date, and name server information.

How are the TLD Zone Files different than the Whois file?

The TLD Zone Files contain only a list of domain name registrations and the IP numbers associated with name servers supporting the domain names. VeriSign's Whois file serves as a directory to determine which registrar is responsible for specific domain name registrations, and it is also an administrative file that contains information in addition to the information contained in the TLD Zone File (as described in #2 above).

Will I still be able to review my domain name registration information to determine if I need to update my domain name registration records with VeriSign?

Yes. VeriSign’s TLD Zone File Access Program does not affect your ability to access either VeriSign or your registrar's Whois databases in any way.
