As the authoritative registry for all .com
and .net domain names and operator of the root directory for the EPCglobal
Network, VeriSign is the leading provider of critical infrastructure
services for the Internet and telecommunications networks. VeriSign’s
Advanced Transaction Look-Up and Signaling (ATLAS®) global infrastructure
is a sophisticated software platform designed to scale the Internet’s
core infrastructure, the Domain Name System (DNS), and support the convergence
of voice and data networks.
Project Titan
Project
Titan is a global initiative to increase capacity so that
the infrastructure can manage the explosive surge in Internet transactions
taking place as e-commerce, social networking and Internet-enabled wireless
devices place huge new demands on the Internet.
Global Capacity and Extensibility
The ATLAS platform is deployed across global
data centers to provide fast, reliable response worldwide based on service
and performance needs. The redundant and secure design ensures availability
and system continuity as Internet traffic continues to grow worldwide.
The ATLAS platform’s protocol flexibility supports applications and
systems beyond DNS as the Internet, telecommunications, and mobile services
evolve and converge.
Scaling Up the Internet
More people use the Internet worldwide more
frequently than ever before. The volume of resolution transactions to
locate information is growing at a dramatic rate. VeriSign developed
the ATLAS technology infrastructure with 10 - 100 times the processing
capacity of the original DNS technology in order to maintain the speed
and reliability of connections as well as integrate new protocols. Built
from robust, proven infrastructure, ATLAS processes over 15 billion
interactions daily, has the capacity for up to 200 billion queries,
and will scale beyond these maximums in the future. The scalability
and capacity of ATLAS means reliability as traffic increases from both
valid service requests as well as malicious service attacks.
The ATLAS platform is the backbone for these
VeriSign services:
The ATLAS architecture consists of:
- A data extraction
process that connects to an authoritative database and extracts, validates
and prepares data for distribution
- The data distribution
process that insures that data in the authoritative database is faithfully
reproduced in distributed lookup engines
- The distributed
lookup engines that maintain local copies of data to provide fast, efficient
retrieval of information.
