Biography

Andrew G. West is a Senior Research Scientist on the Verisign Labs team. Dr. West joined in Summer 2013 after completing his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania.

His work at Verisign has emphasized: (1) Incentivizing domain name purchasing via the application of machine-learning, while also understanding prior registrations with respect to longitudinal trends, forecasting, and virality. (2) Analyzing the role of network endpoints in malware and privacy disclosures via features capturing metadata, time-series behaviors, and dynamic analysis. (3) Applying big data techniques to Internet-scale quantification and characterization problems.

Moving forward, Dr. West will continue to leverage the company's network and security data using his experience with trust/reputation management, applied machine learning, and metadata analysis methodologies. Additional interests include email/Web 2.0 abuse, underground economies, behavioral profiling, Internet virality, and research ethics. This skill set has not only been demonstrated across 35+ peer-review publications but also via a research philosophy that strives to synthesize academic results into actionable business decisions.

Prior to Verisign, his dissertation research investigated security for "open collaboration" applications. His work examined how user-generated content and collaborative semantics are changing how spam and other abuses manifest and can be detected. This yielded tools still in popular use by communities of practice, notably the anti-damage software STiki that has been used to remove 700,000+ damaging revisions from English Wikipedia. Popular media outlets such as the Chronicle of Higher Education and Gizmodo also recognized his contributions, and he remains an active volunteer in the Wikipedia community.

Distinct from his research, Dr. West also manages the selective Verisign Labs Summer Internship Program. This includes the annual recruitment, interviewing, on-boarding, and oversight of a dozen graduate interns who work closely with Verisign Lab's research scientists. He has considerable experience in planning towards successful project outcomes as evidenced by intern mentorship, work with Verisign Lab's University Collaborations program, and having advised much undergraduate research at UPenn. To this end, he always welcomes new cooperative partnerships.

Finally, he remains in active service to the academic and professional communities as a reviewer/editor for multiple conferences and journals.
