Providing a HIPAA-Compliant Network for Hundreds of Practitioners
Entire
story (PDF; 165KB)
Overview
Founded in 1970,
the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has grown to
become the largest public university in the country, with over 7,000
students across eight schools throughout the state. In addition to education,
the institution provides research, healthcare delivery, and community
service.
Key Challenges
The university needed
to provide a secure network to protect confidential patient data and
ground-breaking research findings, but the facility also had to provide
the level of security mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was enacted by Congress in 1996.

“Overall, we
have been very impressed with VeriSign’s customer service.”

Solution
The university turned
to VeriSign for Managed Public Key Infrastructure (MPKI) services and
found that they pointed the university in the straightest possible path
toward HIPAA compliance, while affording the most flexibility. VeriSign®
MPKI services allow a company to easily distribute and manage large
numbers of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates, which assure the
identity of Web sites, email, and specific servers.
Results
- Using VeriSign services, the university was able to secure sensitive
sites on individual servers and save time with digitally signed forms.
- In addition, the university can extend to a greater variety of partners,
knowing its systems and communications are secure.
