What is a ccTLD?
ccTLD is an acronym that stands for "country code top level domain." Each ccTLD has its own domain extension (like .com or .net) that is run by a different in-country registry. There are currently 244 different ccTLDs and 244 different in-country registries. Individuals and businesses have found ccTLDs useful to expand local presence, offer in-language content, enter new markets and even personalize their domain name (sony.cd). (see, Why Go Global for more information on the value of purchasing a ccTLD). If you're interested in buying a ccTLD domain, the following guide provides information on the available extensions, their country of registry, their restrictions and general timeframe for completing a registration. Since each ccTLD is owned and operated by a different entity, the rules regarding registering domain names varies. Many registries have requirements you must meet before allowing a registration. |
