A Server ID, also known as a digital certificate, is the electronic equivalent of a business license. Server IDs are issued by a trusted third party, called a Certification Authority (CA). VeriSign is the world's leading CA, having issued more than 575,000 Server IDs. The CA that issues a Server ID is vouching for your right to use your company name and Web address, just as the office of the Secretary of State does when it issues Articles of Incorporation. CAs can also issue digital certificates to individuals.

Before issuing a Server ID, VeriSign reviews your credentials - such as your organization's Dun & Bradstreet number or Articles of Incorporation - and completes a thorough background checking process to ensure that your organization is what it claims to be, and is not claiming a false identity. Then VeriSign issues your organization a Server ID, which is an electronic credential that your business can present to prove its identity or right to access information

VeriSign gained control over the three domains when it acquired Network Solutions Inc. (NSI) in a $21 billion all-stock deal in March 2000.

The new agreement also takes away the need Digital certificate for VeriSign to spin off the registry division into a completely separate company. When the first agreement was reached, competitors felt maintaining the registry gave NSI an unfair sales advantage.

The original agreement between NSI, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Digital certificate and ICANN in late 1999 called for NSI to retain control over the .com, .net, and .org domains until at least 2004. If the company had split up in a registrar and registry business within 18 months of signing the deal, which would have Digital certificate been before May of this year, the contract would have been extended for another four years until 2008 Digital certificate.
